Review SHIMANO 160mm Brake Rotor Needs Truing Minor Warping

The Shimano RT-MT800-S 160mm Brake Rotor is a high-quality component designed for serious mountain bikers seeking optimal braking performance and reliability. This rotor, part of Shimano's MT800 hydraulic disc brake series, is characterized by its robust construction and advanced heat dissipation capabilities.

Measuring 160mm in diameter, the RT-MT800-S rotor is ideally suited for trail and all-mountain riding, offering ample stopping power in a wide range of conditions. The rotor's 2-piece design features an aluminum center hub and an outer steel ring, which not only enhances heat resistance but also contributes to the rotor's overall lightweight nature.

One of the standout features of this rotor is its ability to withstand minor warping through a process known as truing. Truing is a process that involves readjusting the rotor's shape to ensure that it maintains a flat and true surface, which is essential for optimal braking performance and smooth operation. The RT-MT800-S rotor incorporates a special design that allows for minor warping to be corrected without the need for replacement, providing long-lasting performance and reducing waste.

The rotor is also compatible with Shimano's MT800 hydraulic disc brake calipers, ensuring seamless integration and reliable braking performance. The rotor's smooth, machined surface provides excellent pad contact, while the radial drilling design helps to improve heat dissipation and reduce weight.

In summary, the Shimano RT-MT800-S 160mm Brake Rotor is a top-tier component that offers robust construction, advanced heat dissipation, and the ability to be trued for minor warping. Ideal for trail and all-mountain riding, this rotor delivers reliable braking performance and long-lasting durability, making it a smart choice for serious mountain bikers.

Pros of buying Shimano RT-MT800-S 160mm brake rotor for truing minor warping:

1. High-quality product: Shimano is a well-known brand in the cycling industry, known for its durability and performance.

2. Wide compatibility: The RT-MT800-S rotor is compatible with most Shimano MTB hydraulic disc brake systems, making it a versatile option.

3. Easy to true: With its thin and lightweight design, the RT-MT800-S rotor is easy to true, even for beginners.

4. Affordable: Compared to other high-performance rotors, the RT-MT800-S is relatively affordable, making it a cost-effective option for cyclists on a budget.

Cons of buying Shimano RT-MT800-S 160mm brake rotor for truing minor warping:

1. Limited color options: The RT-MT800-S rotor is only available in black, which may not match the aesthetic of some cyclists' bikes.

2. Potential for noise: Due to its thin design, the RT-MT800-S rotor may produce more noise than thicker rotors, which could be a nuisance for some cyclists.

3. Warping potential: Although the RT-MT800-S rotor is easy to true, it is still susceptible to warping, which may require frequent maintenance.

Recommendation:

If you are looking for a high-quality, affordable, and easy-to-true rotor for your Shimano MTB hydraulic disc brake system, the RT-MT800-S 160mm brake rotor is a great option. However, consider the limited color options and potential for noise before making your purchase. It's always a good idea to keep an eye on the rotor's condition and true it as needed to ensure optimal performance and safety.

Details:

Needs to be trued; not sure when, but it warped ever so slightly at some point. Was used on a Canyon Endurance for about 500 miles. The rubbing is minor and could be used as-is, but it would a good idea to buy with the intent of straightening. Idol it but I don't have the proper tools to so and invest in them would be putting myself way over my head for a rotor.
